The following is an analysis of weather in Thessaloniki for the months of May to September, at 0800, 1400 and 2000 hrs local time. The weather station of the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, the source of the data, is located in the center of the town therefore the winds on the gulf are expected to be slightly stronger.
For all months the prevailing winds are (in order of frequency) SW, NW, NE and SE (primarily in the afternoon).
SW and NW winds are the most frequent (90%) at midday with the exception of May.
SW and NW wind force increases at midday (1400 hrs) and decreases significantly throughout the afternoon until about 2000 hrs.
The SW wind is the afternoon sea breeze of Thessaloniki locally known as the «boucadoura». This phenomenon is particularly strong during the month of July and takes place on a regular daily basis. Accordingly the month of July is the most suitable for sailing competitions.
In July the mean temperature is 28°C, ranging from 22°C to 35°C.
